Now is the time to plan for future

It’s never too soon to plan for a career outside professional football.

That’s the message from Pat Lally, the PFA’s Senior Executive Head of Education, writing in ‘New Goals’, the PFA Education department’s magazine.

“Since July 2006, the Education department has processed over 500 grants covering courses such as accountancy, law, leisure, heavy goods and light goods vehicle driver training, plumbing, and business studies – along with the many degree courses that members are currently undertaking.

“We also have a number of discrete courses in physiotherapy and sports journalism. There are currently 33 members undertaking the physiotherapy course at Salford University and 17 on the sports journalism course at North Staffordshire University.

“These degree courses are primarily funded by the PFA with those candidates undertaking them making a financial contribution towards the overall costs,” he points out.

“It is a big mistake to think that you can wait to re-train until your playing days are over as very few can walk straight into an alternative career once you have been told your services are no longer required.

“I would urge everybody to take the opportunity to enrol on a course that you feel would suit your needs for a career outside football. The aim of the PFA Education department is to provide information, guidance and advice to assist players to make the right choices and to provide them with financial assistance once they have decided what course they wish to undertake.”
