Strength in depth at Old Trafford
Manchester United’s success last season ran right through the club at just about every level.
Their youth team was certainly not overshadowed by the first team’s achievements, when four boys in particular caught the eye – despite the team stumbling at the final hurdle.
A national TV audience watched United lose on penalties to Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup Final – the second leg at Old Trafford played in front of a crowd of more than 23,000. However, battling through to the final did not stop the youngsters from completing all their college courses at Ashton-on-Mersey School.
Midfielder Sam Hewson scored a penalty in the first leg of the final at Anfield and also went on to play for England Under 19s later in May. He also returned during the close season to compete his BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Perfex) which he passed with flying colours.
Two other Youth Cup finalists, Chris Fagan and James Chester, gained Distinctions and Merits in their BTEC National Certificate in Business, while German goalkeeper, Ron-Robert Zieler passed his I.E.S.O.L. English Speaking and Writing exam at Expert level, with City and Guilds, before flying off to play for his country.
All four boys have gained contracts at the club after successfully completing their Scholarship programme.
