Goalie Floyd hits the mark

One of the select band of goalkeepers to actually score a goal is determined to carve out a career as a fitness instructor.

Floyd Croll, who started as a youngster at Ipswich Town, moved on to Wigan Athletic where his education came on in leaps and bounds.

Lynda Watt, Wigan’s Head of Education and Welfare takes up the story: “Floyd came to us with poor to average GCSE results after a pretty hard time at school during his last two years,” she says.

“However, he went on to do the BTEC 1st Diploma in Sport during his first year – which he passed with six merit grades and commenced onto the BTEC National Award which he completed to Merit standard. He also completed and passed his NVQ, Key Skills and Laws of the Game during his second year.

“Unfortunately, Floyd did not receive a professional contract, but has gone on to play part time with Long Melford FC in the Ridgeons League First Division.

“He also got a job with the New Horizons Health and Fitness Centre at Haddenham in Buckinghamshire and says that having the qualifications he’s gained with us has allowed him to progress straight on to an advanced course.

“Floyd is very vocal on how the education he received has given him a good foundation into the sports industry. While doing his BTEC he became very engrossed in the sports psychology unit and is continuing this interest by doing a home study diploma course in sports psychology,” Lynda reveals.

“He admits that while he has never lost track of his utmost ambition to play football professionally, he is making the most of his situation and qualifications – and cannot speak too highly of his time at Wigan.”
