Battling Lewis aiming to shine at Wigan

Lewis Montrose’s story highlights a great example of finding the strength to battle back from a serious injury.

Having been previously associated with Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers, Lewis was given another chance by Wigan and was selected for a first team’s tour to Austria.

Unfortunately, he badly injured a knee and was sidelined for several weeks. “I thought my chance had probably gone at the time as I missed the first two months of the season.

“However, to get on the field for the first team in the Carling Cup at Crewe was a real thrill and when you’ve had that sort of experience you want to do everything in your power to get another chance.

“I know I’ve got to get my head down now and work even harder to make an impression in the future.”

Certainly Lewis’s hard work ethic has been extended to his efforts on the AASE programme. “He has done the AASE programme and will hopefully receive a full framework,” says Lynda Watt, Wigan Athletic’s Head of Education and Welfare.

“Lewis has received some additional help as his GCSE results were not brilliant. However, he has almost finished all aspects of it now as well as the coaching certificate. All our education is done in-house which has also enabled Lewis to do some practical coaching sessions at our Centre of Excellence for the under 10s and under 11s.”

Wigan’s Head of Youth, David Lowe, is also impressed by the way in which Lewis has shown his commitment. “He has tasted first team action and has shown good desire whilst also taking on board what the coaching staff tell him.”
